Santosh Sivan’s Urumi is a miniature masterpiece of moods, emotions, anxieties ruled by a thirst for revenge. The film unfolds like a ballad and is a sweet and simple fairy tale. The 170 minutes film works to a large extent to its perfect casting, fantastic performances, soothing score and technical brilliance.
Santosh has made it like how a period drama should be made without too much talk about freedom struggle, no bombastic dialogues or playing to the gallery for heroism. His vision and concept gives this epic the feel of a Brave Heart or Gladiator.
It provides us a new insight into the hearts and minds of ancient heroes and shot in locations that reflect the period as everything looks fresh, green and clean and one can feel even the mist. Another major plus is that there are hardly any CG special effects that one would associate with a period war film.
Shankar Ramakrishnan’s script is simple and straightforward and keeps the narrative absorbing and inspiring. The film starts in the present day with a modern don’t care youth Krishna Das (Prithviraj) and his friend (Prabhu Deva) having a jolly good time. A big corporate offers Krishna Das a bomb for his ancestral property in Kerala.
On his arrival in Kerala to sign the papers, he learns the truth about his land and ancestors, which is told in a flashback. A brave warrior (Arya), wants to kill Vasco da Gama, the Viceroy of Portuguese Empire in India. But he is brutally killed by the invaders and his son Chirakkal Kelu Naynar (Prithviraj) is out to take revenge with a golden Urumi, that he makes with the ornaments of dead women and children who were burnt alive in a ship that was going to Mecca. It was set on fire and sunk under the instructions from Vasco Da Gama.

The film is spread between the second and third visit of Gama to India and chronicles a varied version of how Gama could have met a bloody death in 1524 AD. Kelu is supported by his childhood Muslim buddy Vavvali (Prabhu Deva). In the journey he meets warrior princess Ayesha (Genelia), who has her own axe to grind against the foreign invaders. Will they be able to kill Vasco Da Gama ?
The major highlight of the film is the performances of its lead actors. Prithviraj as Kelu Naynar is dashing. Nithya Menen looks pretty and is a scene stealer, while Jagathy is outstanding. Amol Gupte, Alex, Robin and others are lifelike. There is also walk in cameo appearances by Arya, Vidya Balan and Tabu.
Music of Deepak Dev enriches the film with Aaro nee aaro, Chimmi Chimmi and the theme music is haunting. A pat for Shankar Ramakrishnan for his intricately crafted script, super editing by Sreekar Prasad without any gimmicks and eye catching beautiful camera work by Sivan and his assistant Anjuli Shukla.

i liked the movie..its a period film with its heart in the right place...
the first half is fast and entertaining though the second half cud have been better...
its also a bit too long...
the script is above average and the performances from the lead cast,jagathy deserve special mention..
the second half reminded pazhassi raja in places...and the flashback-present-re incarnation bit reminded me of magadheera....
on the whole Urumi is a gud watch...
box office-hit akumonnu ariyilla....response was gud ,that too is nt reliable as being the first show a lot of fans were there..

Mammootty hariharan MT team nte pazhassiraja kolluthia thiri veendum malyala cinemayil..malyala cinema kku abhimaanikkan mattoru cinema koodi…URUMI…prithvitraj coming back in a classic style after his bad performance in 2010…urumi will be one among the best movies of 2011…paandi kadhyaum multistar padngalum chaathan comedy kandu madutha malayaalikku oru kidilan historic movie..
Superb camera, location, cast, sound effect , fights, actions dialogues action make up…its not like a Hollywood movie..its absolutely a Hollywood movie..yes I mean it in all sense.. that much superb graphics camera….

aw urumi from aluva matha with a gud aduience. urumi is a visual treat but it has lacked a perfect script. the script in the movie is very loose.. there were many characters and scenes which was really unwanted. positives of the movie : prabh deva , janelia , cinematography art direction , costumes... negatives : prithviraj ( i don't understand why his face is expressionless. ) , direction and script. anyways if u like to watch period movies it will be worth .. i go with 2/5 for the movie.. a gud body with a bad heart is all about urumi.

URUMi is a masala movie,it hav all ingredients for a EPIC movie,at times it reminds ypu Pazhasshi,brave heart ,300..etc etc .....still its not watchable.....because its failure in every department& i mean it.....music& stunts can be exception to an extend...
finally ,the movie looks amateurish& artificial...felt like a stage drama....
watch it for genelia ,nithya menon,both wer good (by looks,nt acting)...'gap' of vidya balan

saw the movie from Kanhangad.Balcony was full!Liked Prithvi,Genelia and the maestro Jagathi...
BGM was good,pakshe korachu dialogs manassilaayilla....main attaction is Santosh Sivan's camera...liked it alot!nalla claps undayirunnu...

Status : Balcony Full AND First class 70%
URUMI is surely entertaining eventhough it has some Lagging and a weak script..the main attraction of this movie is the CAMERAWORK and AWESOME LOCATIONS...and also the old periods has been screened wonderfully in this...!! All the characters were awesome specially Genelia,Arya and Jagathy...!! The scenes of Genelia and Prithviraj was just awesome....and also the scenes of Prabhu Deva and Nithya Menon was excellent..!!

the story a perfectly blended cocktail of revenge patriotism love and pride,one of the best performances by prithviraj genelia and prabhudeva, the second half was a little less intreasting compared to the first......the comedies were perfectly timed except for a few places,vidya balans item dance was misplaced,rather not at all needed at that time........arya did his part well.......most of prithvis dialogues were really good punch dialogs.......at some places the comedy timing was not gud......
all the foreign artists were really gud..........the background music and action sequences were really good genelias fight scenes was super the child artist who did prithvis past has performed really well.....overall a class film with some class performances from prithvi and genelia...........

After the high expectations and long wait saw the much awaited magnum opus URUMI!!
This is what we have been waiting for..nd i got what i wanted..hats off to santhosh sivan..the man is simply awesome..when second half started there was slight dragging but the visuals made it up...superb camera work nd cinematography..!
The thought of mixing the modern world with the ancient era was done well..reminded me a bit of magadheera but it did not end up like that..
A special mention should be given to the dialogues..heavy ayirunnu ellam..!!but failed to understand a few...
Now the performances..stupendous performances from everyone..Prithvi was just "MASS"ive!!..looked like a bull on screen..a real warrior..best choice for the role..
Genelia amazes everyone with the sword fights..jagathi..the man is a class act..prabhu deva did the comedy part really well nd made good use of his flexible body..nalla kayyadi kitti pulliku..the girls nithya menen,vidya balan nd genelia looked really hot!!
Urumi is a mixture of mass nd class...one can see mindblowing fight scenes,excellent cinematography nd camera work and a real hollywood kinda approach in this movie..
Prithvi's first venture as a producer has turned out to be good..hoping to see more good movies from his part..
The only negative i found ws the length..On the whole my rating is 8.5/10!!

Urumi just deals with camera works of the Director. We can feel a major lack of patriotism in this movie.

Movie's director mainly focused on capturing scenories and body parts of heroines!! couple of songs felt unnessesory for this movie,, especially VIDYA BALAN'S song...
PrithviRaj doesn became the real character rather than showing some good poses for cameraman...and director was succesfull to capture his side pose front pose muscles and all,,
coming to Genila.. director again successful capturing her eyes and lips throughout the movie...പിന്നെ കുറയേ " വലത്തോട്ട് കുത്തി ഇടത്തോട്ട് ചാടല് "
one song between prithviraj and genilia.. director was succesful capturing different poses of YOGA with different asanas...camera work was beautiful
Prabhudeva was good with his own comedies...
Nithya menon was promising with her "lasya bhavam".... it was great, she really stick with that character...
Jagathi sreekumar was again done with an amazing performance in this movie..he is the best..

Nice review..
I was also disappointed after seeing this crap movie which is given importance for only visuals..lacked a good script..a lot of unwanted scenes..But was really surprised with the Super reviews..I watched the matinee of release day show @ Sreepadmanabha Trivandrum..Theatre response was too bad...Theri viliyude melam aayirunnu..movie was damn boring..comments made by sm guys made the theatre alive..aa show kanda my friends who were with me ,avarkum movie ishtapetitilla
Let c hw the movie wil b in the coming days..especially after the release of Doubles and China Town which is for both fans and families..I dont think Urumi can satisfy family audiences..

First of all Urumi's script and Prithvi's acting was just average...
All other sections of this film is simply EXCELLENT....
Genelia was superb...
Jagathy was excellent...
Praphudeva was great...
And all the other actors were good...
Prithvi's acting and dialogue presentation was average but he looked really handsome...

very poorly executed movie. with a promising story in hand
the makers could have done a lot better but have miserably failed!
sure the genre , the visuals and all the hype are certain to attract masses
and please some.
BUT, the scripting is weak and unimaginative- fails to create any impact..
fails to capture any sympathy towards a character..
not a single line of dialogue helps us relate to the period of the story.
key characters of rulers are portrayed as brainless jokers.
the right word is --"PLAIN UNEMOTIONAL"--
-- the one thing that a movie of this genre should never become.
set in a period when warriors of the folklore did exist-- the action
scenes or stunts appear comical..even with ultra slow motion the stunts
look at the best theatrical/staged drama.
[a certain character pazhashi in the agegroup (30-40) recently showcased
the minimum agility expected of a swordsman...! the hero character of our story is around 25 but can barely run/jump in a convincing manner even
with the aid of slow motion ].
santhosh sivan is a gifted(maybe the best) camerawielder- BUT he better shoot as told by someone with the brains to make a movie.( no disrespect).
moviemaking is just not his forte.
It's ridiculous to review/analyse a movie after dissecting it ..YET
the ONLY GUD things of it are--
1) the fine acting of jagathy sreekumar( well have u ever heard otherwise??)
2) the characters and performances of Vasco da Gama and of his son.
3) last but the BEST-- some really wonderful tunes by
Deepakdev- Kaithapram & co.

എന്താ പറയേണ്ടത് എന്നാ ആശയ കുഴപ്പത്തിലാണ് ഞാന്. പടം ഇഷ്ട്ടായി... എന്നാലും കുറെ ഭാഗം ബോറടിച്ചിരുന്നു.
സന്തോഷ് ശിവന് നല്ല വിഷ്വലുകള് തരുന്നുണ്ട്... നല്ല സംവിധായകന് ആയിട്ടില്ല....
അനന്തഭാദ്രതിന്റെയും രാവണന്റെയും ചില്ലറ ഹാങ്ങ് ഓവര് ഉരുമിയില് സ്പഷ്ടം ആണ്...
ഉറുമി ചരിത്രത്തില് കലര്ത്തുന്ന ഭാവന ആണ്.. തിരക്കഥ കൊള്ളാം. .. മൂര്ച്ചയും ആഴവും പരപ്പും ഉള്ള സംഭാഷണ ശകലങ്ങള്... പക്ഷെ മൂര്ച്ചയുടെങ്ങിലും അത് മനസ്സില് തുളയുന്നില്ല..
പിന്നെ ദേശസ്നേഹവും രോമാഞ്ചവും ഉണര്ത്തുന്ന ഒറ്റ സീന് പോലും ഇതില് കണ്ടില്ല....
അഭിനയം : പ്രിത്വിരാജ് , ആര്യ. ഇവര്ക്ക് ഭാവങ്ങള് ഇല്ല....ഒറ്റ ഭാവം മാത്രം... ബിലാല് ഇക്കയെയോ ക്ലിന്റ് ഈസ്റ്വൂടിന്റെ കൌ ബോയെ യോ മാതിരി കുറച്ചു സംസാരവും കൂടുതല് പ്രവൃത്തിയും... പ്രഭുദേവ ചിരി ഉയര്ത്തി... നിത്യ , ഗെനെലിയ നന്നായിട്ടുണ്ട്...കാണാനും കൊല്ലം... പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് സന്തോഷ് ശിവന്റെ കാമറ യില്.

പഴശ്ശിയുടെ മൂന്നര മണിക്കൂര് ആസ്വദിച്ചിരുന്നു... ഉരുമിയില് ഒരു പാട് ബോറടി ഉണ്ട്... പിന്നെ ഗാനങ്ങള്...
വിഷ്വലുകള് ഉരുമിയില് മികച്ചു നില്ക്കുന്നു.... ആഗോള നിലവാരത്തിലുള്ള ഈ വിഷ്വലുകള് പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുക... വിജയിപ്പിക്കുക...
